The information below contains our Health Guarantee and other useful information. We cannot urge you strongly enough to keep in touch with us regarding the growth and development of your new puppy. While Veterinarians are useful in many areas of a dogs life, the Breeder has the experience with the growth, health, and development issues specific to the German Shepherd Dog.
By providing you a puppy that is current on shots; has been wormed at least 2 times; and has play with family members, the socialization of each puppy has begun. There are, however, common element conditions present in many puppies, e.g worms, etc. - that are included in the information below.
Loyal Heart German Shepherds Health Guarantee
Your Loyal Heart German Shepherd Puppy is guaranteed against life threatening genetic health defects. Life threatening genetic health defect is a condition that will cause death of the puppy as determined by a licenced veterinarian and/or concurred by our veterinarian (Dr. Old, Richmond Road Vet Clinic). It is recommended that the buyer have the puppy examined by a licensed veterinarian within 5 business days of the purchase date. Should the puppy be found to have a serious life threatening genetic or health defect, the breeder is to be contacted within 24 hours of diagnosis, so arrangements can be made for return of the said puppy within 7 days - or a resonable time as agreed by the parties. If the buyer would like to return the puppy, along with written diagnosis signed by a licensed vet, and concurred by my veterinarian, the buyer is entitled to a replacement puppy of equal value. The breeder is not responsible for the vet bill nor the return transportation cost of the puppy. Puppies that become sick or die due to an accident or buyers negligence (chewing electrical cords, hung by collar, exposing the puppy to strange dogs not living in the home before fully vaccinated, etc.) will not be replaced.
We breed 4-5 litters per year; and a replacement puppy may not be immediately available. In no instance is a refund issued. Either a replacement puppy is offered free from 2 equivalent breedings or the buyer may apply the purchase price of the returned puppy to a breeding of greater pedigree. Equivalent breeding is determined by the titles of the dam and sire and/or the number of V titles, Breed Surveys, Working titles, Champions and/or ROM in 4 generations of immediate pedigree.
There are common conditions in all puppies, e.g. worms and although we attempt to ensure the health of our puppies by deworming this is usually a 2 week cycle and deworming must be continued after receipt of your puppy. To date we have had no condition involving fleas but this is another common condition that can be treated successfully. Puppies although an animal - are like young children and go through a series of ailments. With proper vaccination, diet, and cleanliness these occurrences can be minimized.
Buyer agrees to maintain the puppy's health with regular veterinary care, vaccinations and worming, heartworm preventative, and to provide a loving & caring home with adequate shelter.
Shots & Worming
Your puppy has been started on a parasite and worming program from the time it was 4 weeks old, and on a shot regimen from 6 weeks old. You will be provided a list of shots your puppy has received along with a list of shots your puppy needs. You will also be given a list of the dates and type of worming your puppy has already had with the schedule of future worming.
Hip Dysplasia
Although it is impossible to guarantee a puppy will not get hip dysplasia, we make every effort to avoid such an occurrence by only using stock that has been x-rayed and received OFA certification or an OFA preliminary x-ray indicating no hip displaysia. We take additional precaution by doing PennHip on each of our breeding stock. Our Shepherds have pedigrees that show no hip displasia in their ancestry. Our policy on replacement is stated below.
The guarantee below is good until the puppy is Two (2) years of age against crippling hip dysplasia.
Dogs which are obviously neglected, mistreated or abused WILL NOT BE REPLACED.
Hip Dysplasia is a congenital malformation of the ball and socket joint of the hip. In the event that one of our puppies does become dysplasitc, we will do the following ...
We will replace the puppy with another puppy of equal or greater value if the puppy is found to have hip dysplasia. The X-ray and a copy of the OFA letter of diagnosis must be given to the breeder. If the breeder so chooses, they have the right to have the X-ray re-done by their own veterinarian and submitted to OFA for a second opinion. (Many poor hip readings are inaccurate due to improper positioning by veterinarians and/or their staff). Contact us for a list of qualified veterinarians in your area who have the experience in hip X-rays for OFA purposes as correct diagnosing is a "specialized field". If the buyer chooses to keep the puppy, a certification of sterilization must be given before any replacement will be made by the breeder.

OTHER INFORMATION YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT
Diet (Food)/Supplement Recommendations
We feed all of our dogs and puppies quality premium dog food. Currently we are having excellent results with:
BLUE BUFFALO and/or RAW DIET FED BY LEERBURG
WE ALSO FEED SUPPLEMENTS SUCH AS VIT. C, ENZYMES, FISH OIL & DAILY VITAMINS
YOU NEED TO AVOID ALL FOODS THAT LIST INGREDIENT WHICH IS ANY TYPE OF GRAIN!!
The primary ingredient in premium food is meat based (Chicken, Beef, Turkey, Lamb etc). Premium food promotes good health, strong teeth, shiny coats, and firm stools. Most importantly, studies done specifically on German Shepherd puppies has shown that raising GSD puppies on Adult formulations or those which are for "large breeds" helps reduce the incidence of Pano, weak pasterns, and pancreatic insufficiency. This has been the practice by GSD breeders for many years without any negative effects on growth or size at maturity. To aid in prevention of hip dysplasia, it is our recommendation to give puppies 500mg of Vitamin C daily until 6 months of age, then increasing the amount to 1000mg. Do not allow your puppy to jump from elevated areas, over obstacles, or on concrete until at least 12 months of age.
Socialization
Our puppies are raised underfoot, socialized with other dogs, extensively handled, and exposed to variety of conditions. To ensure your puppy's temperament remains as sound as the day it leaves our home, once your puppy is fully vaccinated, take it places as often as possible. Allow a variety of people to pet your puppy (children, elderly, men, women, different ethnicities). Introduce your puppy to other FRIENDLY dogs of various breeds. Be VERY careful to protect your puppy form unpleasant or traumatic experiences, such as taunting by children or being assaulted by an unfriendly dog. These can have a lasting negative effects which can be difficult to overcome.
Training
German Shepherds are very intelligent dogs with high drive. Responsible owners channel this intelligence and drive in the proper direction with adequate love, attention, and training. Bored, lonely, and/or neglected GSD's can become highly destructive and/or aggressive. We recommend that you enroll your puppy into an obedience class by 6 months of age.
Male Puppies
If a male puppy does not have both his testicles on delivery, the puppy will be sold as a PET. The AKC papers will still be provided, but as a "Limited Registration" meaning the AKC will not register any litters sired by this dog. If the puppy's testicles do drop, and you plan on breeding the dog, the breeder will contact the AKC to remove the "Limited Registration" enabling you to register litters sired by your dog after 1 year of age. If the puppy does not drop both testicles by the time he is 1 year of age, it would be recommended that you have him neutered. A puppy sold with full AKC registration will be replaced free if your vet certifies in writing that at 1 year of age both testicles have not dropped. My vet may require additional proof and once verified your male puppy will be replaced free of charge (less transportation cost)
Ear Management
Immediately contact the breeder if the puppy's ears are not fully standing at the age of 6 months. It is the buyer's responsibility to have the puppy's ears taped by a licensed veterinarian. In addition to taping, the breeder can also provide you with other suggestions which are proven to assist with the standing of the ears. Sometimes during teething it is not unusual for the puppies ears to drop, but normally return upright after teething.
We belong to the German Shepherd Dog Club of America. We also agree with the GSDCA Breeders Code of Ethics. Please click on the following web page to read more about the German Shepherd Dog Parent Club!
